Why was Trump talking about sharks at a campaign event?

During a campaign event on Sunday in Nevada, former President Donald Trump was forced to improvise due to teleprompter issues, leading to an unexpected rant about his aversion to sharks. The event, attended by 6,900 voters, was held in extreme heat that resulted in six people being hospitalized.

In his speech, delivered just two days before the primary election, Trump announced a plan to eliminate taxes on tips and criticized the event organizers, referencing past allegations that he failed to pay contractors for unsatisfactory work, stating, “I don’t pay contractors that do a s— job.”

Without the teleprompter, Trump, who often criticizes renewable energy, recounted a meeting with a South Carolina boat manufacturer. He expressed concerns about the weight of electric boats making them prone to sinking, which led to a tangent about sharks.

“It must be due to my connection with M.I.T., very smart people,” Trump said. “I asked, ‘What would happen if the boat sank because of its weight? You’re in the boat with this incredibly powerful battery, now underwater, and there’s a shark about 10 yards away.’ By the way, have you noticed the recent increase in shark attacks?”

He described asking the manufacturer if he should choose electrocution or jump near the shark in such a scenario.

“I’ll take electrocution every single time,” Trump declared. “I’m not getting near the shark.”

Trump’s well-documented fear of sharks resurfaced, echoing a similar rant from an Iowa campaign stop in October 2023. His remarks on Sunday quickly went viral, attracting widespread online ridicule and raising questions about his fitness for office.
