Whether you work from home or in an office miles away from your house, staying healthy when you’re doing a job that requires you to be sitting at a desk for eight or so hours a day isn’t easy. No matter what else you do, if you have a sedentary job like this, it could be causing you health problems you’re not even aware of yet; your heart health might be affected, and your joints could become problematic, for example, not to mention the fact that when you’re sitting all day, you run the risk of blood clots and of course, gaining weight.
It’s clear that you need to do what you can to stay healthy while you’re at work, but how can this be done? Read on to find out because the more you can protect your health, the happier you’ll be in the future. Plus, you’ll even be more productive at work, so it benefits you in all ways.
A Healthy Commute
Even if you know you’re going to find it hard to get any exercise in while you’re at work due to deadlines and similar issues, that doesn’t mean you can’t do any exercise at all during the day. It’s often difficult for people to find the motivation to go to the gym before or after work because they are tired and just need a rest, and this is understandable. So why not make your commute a healthier one?
It will depend on how far from home you work, but if you can, try to leave the car at home and forego public transport and take up cycling or walking instead. This is the ideal way to get exercise during your working day, and it will also help wake you up and ensure you are more productive when you get to work and less tired when you get home. It pays to be cautious, though; a Triple 8 helmet is essential in case of an accident.
Don’t Eat at Your Desk
Do you have the habit of grabbing a quick sandwich or – worse – some fast food and eating it at your desk? If so, you’re not alone; many people use their desk as their lunch space. The problem is your lunch break should be just that; a break. When you’re eating at your desk, you’ll likely be working as well, and this means you never get any downtime during the day, which is bad for your mental health and can cause stress.
As well as this, when you’re doing something else as well as eating, you’re not focusing on the food, and you’ll probably continue to eat even when you’re full. By not trying to multitask, you’ll find you become more in-tune with your body, and you’ll eat less. Plus, of course, your desk is one of the dirtiest areas in the office, full of germs and bacteria, so it’s far better to eat away from there.
The food you’re eating will save you money and keep you healthier if you were to eat something you made at home. This is because you’ll know exactly what ingredients you have included and ensure it’s full of good things for you.
