Eminem unveiled the debut single from his upcoming album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce),” with the release of “Houdini” at midnight on Friday. The track, featuring elements of Steve Miller Band’s “Abracadabra” and reminiscent of his own hit “Without Me” from 2002, showcases Eminem’s signature style as he delivers a lively and provocative narrative about his past in the ’90s versus the present.
In his characteristically brazen manner, Eminem muses about his former self and offers biting commentary on various aspects of contemporary life. He doesn’t shy away from controversial topics, including a clever reference to Megan Thee Stallion’s 2020 incident with Tory Lanez.
The announcement of Eminem’s 12th studio album has been an elaborate affair. During the NFL draft in April, he teased the album’s release with a video styled as an episode of “Unsolved Mysteries,” posing the question, “Who killed Slim Shady?” This was accompanied by references to his provocative behavior contributing to his demise.
Additionally, a faux obituary for Slim Shady appeared in the Detroit Free Press on May 13, featuring Eminem in a distinctive ensemble. The obituary reflected on his music’s evolution and impact, concluding with a reflection on the complex legacy he leaves behind.
“The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)” is slated for release this summer, promising to deliver Eminem’s unique brand of storytelling and musical prowess to eager fans.
